Unique California

Here are some of the most unusual, unique, weird, odd, out-of-this-world, one-of-a-kind, outlandish, and fun places in California.

I want to make this list before I continue to pile up the unusual places I have been to while living here in California for 3 years. From odd shapes to form an architectural building, this bizarre clown situated in a road intersection …

… to a pharmacy with adjoining bath accessory store, vintage store, and soda/ice cream/coffee bar counter, to a roadside spectacles, and onto more of exotic places of this planet Earth that you’ll find in California.

We’ll formally start with one of Frank Gehry’s eccentric architectural designs. It was once a Chiat/Day Building. Well this building is made famous for its shape …

The Binoculars Building is now owned by Google Los Angeles since January 2011.

Murphy Ranch in Malibu

The entire state of California is an outdoor gallery of murals, graffiti and street arts. It doesn’t fully come into a surprise that an abandoned building was completely covered with graffiti.

What’s even more intriguing is that Murphy Ranch was actually designed to serve as a hold out for fans of the Third Reich waiting for America to fall to the Nazis.

It is now a favorite Malibu hiking trail for its unique characteristic.

Slab City: The Last Free Place in America

This off-the-grid, post-apocalyptic city knows no limits. People don’t own the land they settle on. They don’t pay property tax. No applied laws. No street lights, no buildings, no fees. The rules and regulations are not by the state governance but by their own community. There are no ongoing electricity. Neither sewer or water system!

You may find the last free place in America completely taking a leaf out of a book, but the residents here resort into making something out of their imaginations …

East Jesus is a yard full of artworks that are made with people’s junks.

Another exotic magnum opus artwork near Slab City is Salvation Mountain

Salvation Mountain is a one man’s creation by the late Leonard Knight. He made it out of devotion, and to spread one simple message he wanted for the world to see – God is Love.

The Bunny “Museum”

The hOppiest place on Earth may not be at all the hAppiest. In Pasadena, there lives a couple who has currently collected a whopping total of 30,000 bunny items!!! Some call it obsession, passion, or general hoarding. A lot finds it quite frightening. To me, this OMG-kind of place is certainly very interesting. 😉

Watts Tower

For Simon Rodia, another man’s trash is another man’s tower. These 99.5-ft Watts Towers are handmade constructions diligently and passionately built by Simon Rodia, a native of Ribottoli, Italy, during his time off work over the course of 33 years. The decoration materials … used and collected glasses, shells, pottery shards, bottles and tiles.

El Bordello Alexandra

El Bordello Alexandra is an art-filled, seven-unit apartment located in Venice Beach, just a block away from the Broadwalk.

El Bordello Alexandra

Here’s a fun fact. Bordello is a slang for a house of prostitution. El Bordello Alexandra was humored to be as such, what once a heroine den, and is now, like previously said, an art-filled (inside and out) private residential building.

We are getting too strange so I’m going to stop from here. If you’re intrigued by one of these odd places, either click to the ones I linked or try the Search tab.

I’ll leave you with these freaky acts … [The following contains images that you may find disturbing.]

A man inserted a hook through his nose and it came out of his mouth. Sorry for the graphic image. Yikes.

  1. Those creepy bunnies definitely don’t make me “hoppy”, but I love the binoculars building. At least with freaky clown ballerina you’ll be able to give good directions. Who could miss that!

    • Yeah, most of my blog readers get freaked out by the bunny house. That man-ish ballerina clown looks cool, but sure it can make a little kid in a car cry. 🙂

  2. Oh I love the binoculars building! That one is so iconic. I would love to explore Slab City though. That place really intrigues me…haha…

    • It is a bizarr-o-world, and I love it! I don’t know about the insides of that guy. Before the hook, he drilled a hole to his nose and kept it there for a while.

  3. You do lead an interesting life in California that’s for sure. I wanted to live in Slab City until I read the no sewage or water bit… Funnily enough the Bunny Place is still the top of my list! Keep exploring! 🙂

    • If someone challenged me to live in a couple od days in Slab, I probably would do it … just as long I’m compensated with some sort afterwards. 😀

    • I love love love his eccentric architectural designs. If I have money in the world, I’d go around the world to see each of his creations.

    • I know. I was weighing down my options. I was considering of bringing new materials along with the ones I already talked about. And so I added the Freakshow in Venice.

  4. California is definitely a unique state (of mind)! Slab City probably is at the tops of the list and those last two images are a wee bit disturbing. 😉

  5. Wow! There really are some very strange buildings and structures in CA. The bunny museum is rather bizarre. What an obsession! The binoculars building is my favourite. Have a great week, Rommel. 🙂

  6. I thought the Watts Tower was a little strange when I first heard about it but I applaud the idea. The rest of these make it look completely normal, Rommel 🙂

  7. I just came back from a quick visit back to my hometown in CA and I have not encountered any unique anything. I guess you see those unique, weird … only in southern CA 🙂
But of course these are great captures and I know in a couple of years we will be in slab city.

    • I don’t believe you’ve never seen anything unique in Norhtern California. You probably have, you just don’t see it as is. 😉 A quick CA visit eh? SoCal definitely outweirdo NorCal. 😀

  8. This is a wonderful collection of bizarre sites, to be sure. I intend on seeing those large binoculars some day, but that bunny house is definitely not on my list. lol. 🙂

  9. You take us to another level of bizarre and eclectic with your list Rommel!!! Not all appealing to me, certainly not the bunnies, but so very intriguing 😀 Great post.

  10. Please identify the locale of the ballerina clown – is it in Silver Lake (Neighborhood of LA)?

I sympathize with the bunny collectors – if you have three of ANYTHING, be it bunny figurines or teapots or Coca-Cola logo’d items, people will assume you have a collection and start GIVING YOU THINGS! I had a trio of cat figurines since I was a kid; my mother-in-law saw them and assumed I collected cats; the next thing you know I have cats all over the place from her, my cousin, and random others – dishtowels, napkin holders, bookends… HELP!

Don't be shy to say hi.
